What would you call sesame seed butter? Tahini!!! When I was working on the Hummus recipe - my first time.

I wanted to purchase a Tahini jar from a store. And, with so many choices on the aisle I returned home and searched for brand recommendation. Curiosity led me to investigate how it is made and realized that it could be made under 10 minutes and used in recipes like Hummus, Baba Ghanoush, pita sandwiches, Salad dressings, dips and also in cookies.

From a nutrition point of view sesame seeds have high levels of calcium and protein thus make a useful addition to vegetarian and vegan diets.

  • Course: Appetizer, Side Dish
  • Cuisine: Mediterranean
  • Preperation Time: 10 minutes
  • Cook Time: 5 minutes
  • Total Time: 15 minutes

Ingredients

  • Sesame seeds hulled: 1 Cup
  • Oil grapeseed or canola: 2-3 Tablespoons
  • Pinch of salt optional

Instructions

In a saucepan add sesame seeds over medium-low heat.

Keep stirring until the seeds become fragrant and changes color, around 5minutes.

Transfer the toasted seeds to a plate and cool completely.

In a food processor add toasted sesame seeds and process it for a 2minutes.

Add 3 tbs of oil and process it again for 3 min or so, stopping between to scrap the bottom and sides of a food processor. Check the consistency, it should be smooth and pourable.

Season with salt to taste. Process it again to incorporate salt.

Recipe Notes

Notes: Tahini can be stored in the fridge for two weeks. If you notice the oil is separating in the fridge, give the tahini a good stir before using.

To make Sauce:

Grind tahini(paste) along with some lemon juice, garlic and warm water.

Variations:

You can add Sriracha for little spiciness.

Maple syrup for little sweetness and to cut out that little bitterness that sesame seeds have.
